Important USPTO Fee Changes Now in Effect for 2025

The USPTO implemented new trademark and patent fees on January 18-19, 2025, affecting businesses and inventors filing trademark and patent applications.

For trademark applications, the previous lower-cost filing option has been eliminated. All applications now require a $350 per-class fee. Applications must use pre-approved descriptions from the USPTO’s Trademark ID Manual and stay under 1,000 characters – exceeding these requirements triggers additional fees. This affects both new trademark applications and renewals of existing registrations.

Important USPTO Fee Changes Now in Effect for 2025

On the patent side, all fees increased by 7.5% as of January 19, including maintenance fees required to keep patents in force. This represents the first major patent fee adjustment in several years.

These changes make strategic IP planning more important than ever. Consider prioritizing key trademark filings and carefully reviewing patent maintenance decisions. Although higher fees shouldn’t deter protection of valuable IP assets, they do emphasize the importance of focused, strategic IP portfolio management.
